Initial Training

8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training

COST: $55

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Security Guard Training Course is the first mandatory course to get your New York State Security License.

Class topics:

Review and Examination:
Review materials. Instructors will test students on the topics covered in the form of multiple choice and true/false questions.

Each participant must pass a written test with a minimum score of Seventy percent (70%) after the lecture and a review of material. Anyone who does not meet that standard will be retested after an additional review of the material. The program includes all teaching materials and Course Completion Certificate. After completion of this course, you will be able to apply for an unarmed security guard license.

16-Hour On-The-Job Training

This course must be completed within 90 days of employment.

It expands the security guard’s knowledge of his or her new profession, and develops skills which are necessary to carry out the performance of their duties.

This is a 2-day course, attendance to both days are required in order to receive a certificate of completion!

NOTE: Retired law enforcement officers are exempt from these two initial requirements.

Annual Requirements

8-Hour Annual In-Service Training

This course must be completed each calendar year you hold a security guard registration. Your registration is issued for two years, therefore, you must complete two 8 Hour Annual In-Service training courses within your registration effective and expiration dates to be eligible for renewal.

What is the first step to becoming a security guard?

If the person is a CIVILIAN they must get an unarmed guard license first. The first requirement is to take the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment. The course must be followed up by the 16-hour On-The- Job Training course.

What are the requirements to maintain my unarmed license for renewal?

Asna NYS Unarmed Security Guard must take the 8-Hour Annual In-Service every year (unarmed guard). (Twice within their 2-year license expiration.)

How do I become an Armed Security Guard?

If the person is a CIVILIAN, they must get an unarmed guard license first before becoming armed.

When you have been issued an Unarmed Security Guard License you will need the 47-Hour Firearms Training to become Armed Security.

Do I get an exemption for being military?

Unfortunately, Military are treated with civilian status by the Division of Licensing. There, the exemption requirements do not apply to Military.

Is there an exemption I am Retired Law Enforcement?

Yes, but this fall into different categories between Police, Peace, and Federal Officers.

Police officers and State Court Officers Retired less than 10 years

Are exempt from the pre-assignment, 16-hour OTJ and 47-hour training as long as you are in good standing and have a “good guy” letter. The only requirement is to take the 8 Hour Firearms training.

Police Officers Retired for more than 10 years

In addition to the 8-Hour Firearms for armed security you must take the 8-hour annual in-service (unarmed class.) You are required to take both each year. (Twice within two years before the license expires.

Retired Peace Officers and FEDERAL OFFICERS

Must apply for a WAIVER. It is a two-step process. You can download the waiver on our site. You will need to take the 8-HR Firearms for armed security and submit that certificate to DCJS to request an EXEMPTION. If granted you can then apply to Division of Licensing. If not EXEMPT you will need to take the 47-Hour Firearms.

NOTE: PEACE OFFICERS within 5 years of their retirement do not need to take the Firearms Course. They can apply for the Waiver directly

What are the Requirements for the 47-hour Firearms Training?

A PERSON MUST HAVE A PISTOL PERMIT & CURRENT NYS SECURITY GUARD LICENSE to take the 47-HR Firearms Training.
