DCJS Requirments for NYS Licensed Armed Security Guards

Training

47-HOUR FIREARMS TRAINING COURSE

The 47-Hour Firearms Training Course is required for individuals seeking to become a NYS Armed Security Guard.

You are not required to already hold a NYS Security Guard Registration before taking this course. New applicants may complete the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course and the 47-Hour Firearms Training Course, then apply directly for their Armed Security Guard Registration.

REQUIREMENTS

Participants must have:

Valid NYS Pistol License
Personal handgun
Outside-the-waistband holster
Approximately 700 rounds of ammunition (14 boxes of 50)

Classroom and firearms instruction
Live-fire training and qualification
Range time and targets included
Training materials and safety equipment included

COST

47-Hour Firearms Training — $725

Ammunition is not included. Participants must provide their own ammunition.

NEW TO SECURITY?

If you are not currently registered as a NYS Security Guard, you may complete the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Course and 47-Hour Firearms Course and apply directly for your NYS Armed Security Guard Registration.

Active and retired law enforcement personnel may be eligible for training exemptions. Check with the NYS Department of State, Division of Licensing Services for applicable requirements and exemptions.

Annual Requirements

ANNUAL TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

NYS Armed Security Guards must complete required annual training during each two-year Security Guard Registration period.

During each two-year registration period, armed guards are required to complete:

Two 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Courses
Two 8-Hour Annual Firearms Training Courses

This generally means one Annual In-Service course and one Annual Firearms course each year.

RETIRED LAW ENFORCEMENT

Qualifying retired police officers and certain exempt retired peace officers who have been retired for 10 years or less are exempt from the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training requirement.

Retired officers working as armed security guards must still complete the required 8-Hour Annual Firearms Training each year.

After 10 years of retirement, the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training is also required each year.

8-HOUR ANNUAL FIREARMS TRAINING

The course includes:

Firearm safety and review
Use of Force training
Written examination — 70% minimum passing score
50-round firearms qualification — 70% minimum passing score

NYS Armed Security Guards must qualify with the firearm or firearms they carry while on duty.

HR-218 / LEOSA COMBO — SAVE $25

Retired law enforcement officers who also need their HR-218 / LEOSA Qualification may combine both courses and save $25 compared with registering for each course separately.
